Verwarnung für Russell
Und auch das letzte Urteil des Tages ist da: George Russell hat nur eine Verwarnung kassiert, er darf seinen fünften Startplatz also behalten. Auch hier das Urteil im Wortlaut:
"This was a very similar case to the decision of this panel of Stewards regarding Charles Leclerc (document 29) with some important differences."
"Sainz ran into the runoff at Turn 2. Russell was the next car on track and was fully committed to his braking, and unlike Leclerc, was already turning into the corner, when the yellow flag was displayed on the far right of the runoff. The Stewards consider that there was no reasonable way for Russell to have seen that flag and even if he had, he could not have changed his braking."
"Once he rounded the corner, Russell accelerated normally. Unlike Leclerc, however, the illuminated green light panel between turn 2 and turn 3, was a significant distance further down the track and harder to see at the point of acceleration than in the case of Leclerc. But, ultimately, Russell did see the green."
"Russell also did not get the benefit of the DRS in that zone because it was automatically switched off, slowing his lap."
"The Stewards pointed out in the Leclerc decision many mitigating factors. In this case, the Stewards believe there is further mitigation."
"However, it is a matter of safety that the drivers understand that when they have seen a car in a runoff, and green light indicates that they are inside of a yellow sector and that some indication, such as a lift or at least limited acceleration, acknowledging that other issues can occur within a yellow zone."
"Thus, in this limited set of circumstances, in particular that the yellow flag could not have been seen, the Stewards order a Driving Reprimand rather than a more serious penalty."
"The Stewards recommend that this matter be clarified in the next Drivers' meeting and note that these penalties should not represent a binding precedent."

Geldstrafe für Williams
Williams muss für die unsichere Freigabe von Albon derweil 5.000 Euro zahlen. Weil dadurch kein anderer Fahrer beeinträchtigt wurde, gab es keine höhere Strafe. Auch hier das Urteil im Wortlaut:
"The car was released from the garage with the engine cooling fan still attached. The car was stopped at the first opportunity, at the pit exit, and subsequently the driver removed the fan and threw it overboard where it was subsequently retrieved by a marshal. Albon the drove away and entered the pits without setting an additional time."
"The general expectation when released in an unsafe condition is to simply stop at the next safe location. Throwing parts overboard, requiring a marshal to retrieve them is not normal. However, in this case the actions of the team and driver prevented the qualifying runs of any other driver from being affected, as a yellow flag would have had to be shown if the car had remained where it was, or had driven to a run-off, and in this unique case, throwing the part overboard avoided the yellow flag. As was discussed in the hearing, this turns out to be 'least worst option.'"
"Had any of these actions affected other competitors, or created a further unsafe situation the Stewards would have taken further action. However, in this case we impose the usual penalty for a release in an unsafe condition of ?5,000."
Gasly disqualifiziert
Fangen wir einmal mit dem Franzosen an. Wie erwartet lässt ein technischer Verstoß nur eine Disqualifikation zu. Am Rennen darf er zwar teilnehmen, er muss aber als Letzter starten. Alle Fahrer hinter ihm rücken damit in der Startaufstellung eine Position auf.
Hier die komplette Erklärung im Wortlaut:
"The Technical Delegate reported that Car 10 exceeded the permitted 100Kg/h fuel mass flow on the final timed lap of Q2."
"The team representatives explained that they had an unexpected short duration technical fault that raised the fuel mass flow greater than expected in a transient fashion. The cause was agreed by the FIA technical staff."
"That the fuel mass flow was greater than the limit at that moment was not disputed by the competitor."
"The competitor demonstrated to the Stewards that the technical fault resulted in a slower lap time and that no performance advantage was obtained at that moment. Thus, they argue, this should be taken into mitigation. They also noted that the great rarity of breaches of this article demonstrates that this is not part of their strategy, and that the scale of the transient simply exceeded the margin they maintain to prevent a beach."
"The usual penalty for a breach of the technical regulations is disqualification and the Stewards note that Article 1.3.3 of the International Sporting Code states 'If an Automobile is found not to comply with the applicable technical regulations, it shall be no defence to claim that no performance advantage was obtained.' In addition to the Code this has long been the position of the International Court of Appeal."
"Thus, the Stewards apply the usual penalty and disqualify the car and driver from the classification of qualifying."
Die Urteile sind da
Zumindest die ersten beiden schon einmal. Gasly wird wie erwartet disqualifiziert, Williams bekommt eine Geldstrafe. Mehr gleich bei uns!
Hamilton: Reifen haben nicht funktioniert
Während wir weiter auf die offiziellen Urteile warten, wollen wir uns schon noch anhören, was Lewis Hamilton zu seinem Qualifying zu sagen hat: "Das Qualifying war enttäuschend, da wir gestern einen guten Tag hatten, und ich dachte, wir könnten um einen Platz in den ersten beiden Startreihen kämpfen."
"Leider hatte ich Probleme, die Reifen zum Arbeiten zu bringen, und genau darum geht es", erklärt er und ergänzt: "Unser Ziel ist es, morgen nach vorne zu kommen, und ich bin zuversichtlich, dass wir das schaffen können."
"Es ist nicht immer einfach, hier Plätze gutzumachen, aber wir haben eine etwas andere Reifenstrategie als die anderen, was uns helfen könnte. Wir müssen auch auf die Reifen achten, denn hier kann man leicht Probleme mit den Hinterreifen bekommen."
"Wenn uns das gelingt, können wir morgen hoffentlich einen besseren Tag als heute erwischen", so Hamilton.
Keine Strafe für Russell?
Mercedes hat gerade seine obligatorische Pressemitteilung zum Qualifying rausgeschickt. Das ist deshalb spannend, weil das ein Indiz dafür sein könnte, dass George Russell keine nachträgliche Strafe bekommen hat.
Denn dort heißt es, dass Russell morgen von P5 starten wird. Und die Teams werden ja immer etwas vor der Öffentlichkeit über die Urteile der Rennkommissare informiert. Gleich könnte also das offizielle FIA-Dokument kommen.
Wir halten uns mal bereit.
Deutlich langsamer als erwartet
Die Pole-Zeit von Leclerc lag am Ende bei 1:41.365. Das ist eine Überraschung, denn die Teams hatten damit gerechnet, an diesem Wochenende satte zwei Sekunden schneller zu sein. Das verrät Mario Isola von Pirelli.
Der Italiener erklärt: "Auch heute haben wir gesehen, dass die Strecke immer schneller wird, je mehr Runden die Autos gefahren sind." Trotzdem sei man noch "weit davon entfernt", was man eigentlich erwartet hatte.
So sei vorher eine Zeit von 1:39.4 simuliert worden, und nicht einmal die Pole-Zeit des Vorjahres (1:40.203) konnte man erreichen. Das zeige, "dass es noch Spielraum für weitere Streckenentwicklung während des Rennens gibt", so Isola.
Zhou: War nur Wasserträger für Bottas
Der Chinese war mehr als sechs Zehntel langsamer als sein Teamkollege. Doch dafür gibt es dieses Mal eine Erklärung. "Wir wussten, dass ich am Sonntag eine Strafe bekommen würde, die mich dazu zwingt, vom letzten Startplatz aus zu starten", erinnert er.
"Deshalb wollten wir das Gesamtergebnis des Teams optimieren. Mein Ziel war es, Valtteri einen Windschatten zu verschaffen, damit er so nah wie möglich an Q2 herankommt, was wir im FP3 geübt haben", so Zhou.
Oder anders gesagt: Er opferte sein Qualifying für Bottas, weil es für ihn selbst sowieso um nichts ging. Brachte aber nicht wirklich etwas, denn der Finne landete als 18. auch nur eine Position vor ihm.
"Letztendlich waren wir heute einfach nicht schnell genug, um es ins Q2 zu schaffen", zuckt Bottas die Schultern. Sauber schied damit zum dritten Mal in Folge mit beiden Autos in Q1 aus.
